The Bent County Fort Lyon Fire Mix is well adapted on shallow to deep, medium textured soils that are found on the Central to Northern Great Plains.  These grasses will tolerate some alkalinity.  It is useful for forage, conservation, and wildlife use.  Elevation ranges from 3,500 to 5,500 feet and the average annual precipitation is 7 to 15 inches.

Blue Grama - Major native species of the western Great Plains and the Southwest.  One of the most widely distributed of all native grasses.  A warm season, perennial, open sod forming short grass.

Buffalograss - Native to southern Great Plains, Texas, Arizona and Colorado.  It is the dominant species of the short-grass region of the upland areas of the central Great Plains.  A warm season, low growing, perennial sod forming grass.

Sideoats Grama - Native to U.S. and widely distributed eastward from Rocky Mountains.  Warm season, bunchy sod forming perennial grass.

Western Wheatgrass - Native to U.S. and of primary importance of northern Great Plains but occurs in every state.  Medium height, cool season, long-lived, coarse-leaf, sod forming perennial grass.

Sand Dropseed - Native, warm season, perennial bunchgrass.  Occurs abundantly on sandy open sites in Southern Plains and Southwest.  Widely distributed in U.S.

Galleta - Native to the dry deserts of the southwestern U.S.  Short to medium-sized, warm season, bunchy sod-former.

Alkali Sacaton - Native to the western U.S.  A stout, coarse-leaved, warm season, bunchgrass.
